Content Area Program Review Training

Step 3: Purpose of Content Review

16 KAR 5:010 outlines the role of the Content Area Review Committee.

With the adoption of performance-based accreditation standards, the Content Area Review Committee was created to provide content area expertise to both the EPSB staff and the Reading Committee. These committees are charged with evaluating educator preparation program review documents, looking closely at program content to ensure adequacy of preparation and alignment of programs to learned society guidelines, KERA Initiatives (Learner Goals and Academic Expectations, Program of Studies, and CATS), and appropriate Kentucky Performance Standards. Nominations for these committees are sought from several statewide organizations and from institutions offering educator preparation programs. Comments submitted by these Content Area Review Committee members are used by EPSB staff and the Reading Committee in making recommendations of program approval to the EPSB.

The Content Area Review Committee analyzes an educator preparation program to establish congruence of the program with standards of nationally recognized specialty program associations and appropriate state performance standards. This committee does not make any determination or decision regarding the approval or denial of a program. This committee submits written comments to the EPSB staff and the Reading Committee for use in the program approval process.
