National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
Important Information for New National Board Certified Teachers
NBPTS is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization
governed by a board of directors, the majority of whom are classroom
teachers. Other members include school administrators, school
board leaders, governors and state legislators, higher education
officials, teacher union leaders and business and community leaders.
The
National Board for Professional Standards Certification process,
requiring intense self-reflection and analysis of one's own practice,
is a forceful professional development experience. Having measured
their practice against the highest and most rigorous standards
for the profession, teachers say that their teaching is resultantly
more focused, reflective, and confident. Teachers who achieve
National Board Certification can apply for Rank 1 from the Education
Professional Standards Board. Rank 1 is the highest rank in Kentucky
and may allow for an increase in salary for teachers based on
the local district pay scale that considers educational level
and experience.
Offered on a voluntary basis and valid for 10 years, the advanced
system of National Board for Professional Teaching Certification
for Professional Teaching Standards complements, but does not
replace, state licensing. Each state, school district and school
decides how best to capitalize on the National Board Certification
process and the expertise of NBPTS as it designs instructional
arrangements to promote student learning and support professional
practice.

Information for New Candidates
Temporary Suspension of Enrollments in the Teachers’ National Incentive Trust Fund
On January 3, 2012, the Education Professional Standards Board (EPSB) was requested to submit plans to adjust for a 7 – 9 % budget reduction for FY13 and FY14. In response to the need to reduce its budget accordingly, the EPSB approved the temporary suspension of all enrollments into the Teachers’ National Certification Incentive Trust Fund. Should funding become available, staff will enroll the number of candidates into the trust fund commensurate with the amount allocated. Please contact Robert Brown at the EPSB with further questions.
Contracts for mentoring services through the Candidate Support Providers will not be issued at this time. The priority use of the funds will be to enroll as many teachers as possible into the trust fund. The $200 teacher stipend per day for two (2) days has also been suspended for the current budget cycle. Additionally, substitute reimbursements will be suspended until further notice.
Those teachers who enrolled in the 2011-2012 cycle and made application to the Teachers’ National Certification Incentive Trust Fund will receive the 75% out-of-pocket reimbursement upon successful completion of NB certification in the fall of 2012.
